Downside of oral/digestive decontamination

In a randomized controlled trial published in 2009 (abstract), intubated ICU patients who underwent oral/digestive decontamination had lower mortality than control patients. However, a follow-up study from this trial shows that the the point prevalence of resistant gram-negative colonization rates were higher after the intervention than before the intervention. This may give pause to those ICU’s considering routine decontamination protocols, and further long-term follow-up of clinical outcomes from this study will be interesting (abstract).
