In this large retrospective analysis of a registry of >17,000 patients who underwent total hip arthroplasty, the overall incidence of PE was 0.4%, and mortality was 0.5%, neither of which differed by type of VTE prophylaxis utilized (ASA, heparin, warfarin, or mechanical). Given the overall low incidence of VTE in these patients, this study calls into question the utility of using medical thromboprophylaxis on all hip patients, and argues for a risk-stratified approach to VTE prophylaxis (abstract)
