Evidence base for IDSA guidelines

In this review of IDSA guidelines published in the last 16 years, only 23% of the recommendations were based on level 1 evidence (high quality randomized trials), and 37% were based only on expert opinion. As with any guidelines, IDSA guidelines should not be used to supplant clinical judgement and many recommendations are not based on high quality clinical evidence (abstract)
