The Joint Commission

May 16th, 2009

What a phenomenal groundbreaking moment. For those of us that were able to hear the President of JCAHO speak to us yesterday, it was a light bulb moment for many; hospitals, hospitalists, and federal regulatory agencies REALLY ARE aligned in their quest for high quality and safe care. We heard it from the horses mouth; that a prominent and powerful regulatory agency such as JCAHO really does want to give us meaningful measures. They want to rid us of the “flunkers” and let us focus on the successful ones (those with direct evidence of outcome improvement). They are not interested in having us invest time and resources in measures that either do not matter, or that have a string of unintended consequences. It is up to us to keep an open dialogue between what we want to measure/improve, and what our regulators want us to measure/improve. They should be synonymous, and they will be synonymous, if we stay engaged. Now, isn’t that nice to hear??
