As those of you who have followed my posts on this blog know, I’ve been spending a lot of time mulling over issues related to hospitalist job satisfaction and career sustainability. I’ve written about concrete things like re-thinking hospitalist work schedules and minimizing low-value interruptions, as well as more abstract concepts like assessing your group’s “gross happiness index.”
My fascination with these issues and my concern about their potential impact on the specialty of hospital medicine eventually led John and me, as course directors, to the theme of this year’s practice management pre-course at HM17 – Practice Management Success Strategies: Building a Practice That People Want to Be Part Of. Perhaps, like me, you are interested in digging deeper into matters of career satisfaction and sustainability. Or perhaps you are simply focused on the more mundane struggle just to recruit and retain enough qualified providers for your group. In either case, I invite you to join us on Monday, May 1 for this important pre-course.
We have an outstanding faculty this year, led by my consulting partner John Nelson, MD, FACP, MHM. John will be talking about what we are convinced is the foundation of a healthy practice: a culture of ownership. He will also address schedule and work allocation, as well as reimbursement and compensation issues. Jerome Siy, MD, SFHM, CHIE, department head of hospital medicine at HealthPartners in Minneapolis will cover recruitment and onboarding tactics, and strategies for greater physician engagement. Roberta Himebaugh, MBA, SFHM, Senior Vice President for Acute Care Services with TeamHealth will share ideas for helping hospitalists do what they do best, and explore how hospitalists can more successfully influence discussions about their value equation and ROI.
We’ve structured the program so that there will be lots of opportunity for questions and discussion with the faculty, as well as time for attendees to share their own learnings and best practices related to building and maintaining an attractive, thriving hospitalist practice. Leslie Flores is a founding partner at Nelson Flores Hospital Medicine Consultants, a consulting practice that has specialized in helping clients enhance the effectiveness and value of hospital medicine programs as well as those in other hospital-focused practice specialties since 2004. Ms. Flores began her career as a hospital executive, after receiving a BS degree in biological sciences at the University of California at Irvine and a Master’s in healthcare administration from the University of Minnesota. In addition to her leadership experience in hospital operations, business development, managed care and physician relations, she has provided consulting, training and leadership coaching services for hospitals, physician groups, and other healthcare organizations. Ms. Flores is an active speaker and writer on hospitalist practice management topics and serves on SHM’s Practice Analysis and Annual Meeting Committees. She serves as an informal advisor to SHM on practice management-related issues and helps to coordinate SHM’s bi-annual State of Hospital Medicine Survey.
